ECI is the 2nd largest state prison east of the Mississippi River. The religious gatherings at the prison are overwhelmingly muslim. The prison divided the Christian meetings into several groups meeting at different times. Pastor Mitchell was invited to be a guest speaker at the Nondenominational group where he was a regular speaker for over 2 years. A retiring prison chaplain was approached by some inmates asking if a new group could be formed that emphasized teaching the Bible, making Pastor Mitchell as overseer. After several meetings, much prayer, and approval from the warden, Calvary Chapel ECI Prison Fellowship was born. This was truly a supernatural work of the Lord. The ECI fellowship began with 6 men zealous for the Word of God. The group has had steady growth, formed a worship team, and has developed leaders, as Pastor Mitchell has taught verse-by-verse through several books of the Bible.
